The original Southside Elementary building was opened in 1953. In 1973, a third grade wing was added to the original building. In 1985 Maple Elementary was built next to Southside and housed grades 5 and 6. During the 1993-94 school year, plans for redesigning and combining Southside School and Maple School complex were begun. This “new” building, named Southside, was ready for the 1994-95 school year. However, in 1997-98, this large complex housing approximately 870 students, grades 2-5, was again divided into two separate schools: Southside East and Southside West. Southside East Elementary, grades 2 and 3, shared with Southside West, grades 4 and 5, a new gymnasium, library/media center, and a commons area, which included a cafeteria. Due to rapid growth in students numbers, a new elementary school was built in 2006 to house grades 1 and 2. Southside East and West were then combined in the fall of 2006, and houses grades 3, 4, and 5.
Along with the regular class offerings of mathematics, reading, English, spelling, social studies, and science; students attend classes in physical education, music, computer, art, and library. For those needing extra help or are in the need of special services in academic areas, there are classes available in Title I reading and mathematics, resource lab, speech, and English as a second language. A Character-Centered/Character Education Program is also provided to all students. A federally funded free/reduced breakfast and hot lunch program is available to qualifying students.
One of the highlights of the school year affects the fifth grade students. Southside sends all their fifth grade students to the Ozark Natural Science Center near Huntsville. This is an overnight trip that the students look forward to. Students experience hands-on activities teaching them about the wildlife, plant life, and the environment of this Ozarks area.
Regarding the arts, all classes have opportunities to perform in music programs. There are opportunities for students to showcase their individual or group talent by performing at one of the monthly Character Assemblies, or perform in a school-wide talent show at the end of the school year.
